Like many ancient Iranian masques the Shah Cheragh mosque in Shiraz has a stunning high domed hall that is covered in tiny square, triangular, and hexagonal mirrors. The youtube video below gives you an insight into this mosque's mirrored splendour. A trip to the Shah Cheragh mosque was an inspirational and pivotal moment in Farmanfarmanaian's life and career that started her interest in the crafts of Iran.
Ayeneh Kari is the traditional art of cutting mirrors into small pieces and slivers, then placing them in decorative shapes over plaster. This form of Iranian reverse glass and mirror mosaics is a craft traditionally passed on from father to son. Farmanfarmaian enlisted the assistance of the Iranian mirror mosaic craftsman, Hajji Ostad Mohammad Navid, in the creation of a number of her pieces. She is the first contemporary artist to reinvent this traditional Iranian medium in contemporary art.
