Cymatics by Hans Jenny

Recommended Read this week is 'Cymatics' by Hans Jenny (1904 - 1972). It is a primer for understanding the history of the field of cymatics (physics of sound), the geometry within sound waves and their creative influence. Probably best to read this first before last week's Recommended Read 'Interference Theory'.

Even our early ancestors knew that sound and its impact on us at a cellular level were highly important. Our depth of our understanding of the science of cymatics grows every day. The significance of sound in the creative process and its influence on us is becoming more mainstream since Jenny's early work.  John Stuart Reid's cymascope has contributed significantly to this field.

I have included a couple of YouTube videos at the end of this blog for those of you who are new to the subject. These stunning geometric patterns are like animated mandalas.

This original hardcover edition now seems to be a collectible item and secondhand copies are quite expensive. It is currently reprinting and is due out March 2022 - Floris Books.

Interference: A Grand Scientific Musical Theory by Richard Merrick
published by Richard Merrick
978-0-615-20599-1

Picture
Recommended Read this week is Richard Merrick's book "Interference Theory", which falls into the field physic's cymatics, the science of sound.  He analyses how our auditory system recognises sound as simple shapes. His Harmonic Interference Theory supports the view that sound and its geometry are the creative force; that matter is essentially crystallised harmonics, founded on geometry. A fairly technical read.

Reminds me of John Stuart Reid's research into how dolphins communicate using sonic sound bubbles using his cymascope.

Sound and silence in general (natural sound, musical, harmony, etc) is a fascinating subject area, notably its link to geometry.

The Power of Limits: Proportional Harmonies in Nature, Art and Architecture

'The Power of Limits' by Gyorgi Doczi (1909 - 1995) is a staple textbook for sacred geometry fans. With a emphasis on the recurring and ever popular Golden Mean spiral.

There is no interpretation of the meaning of geometry, rather a detailed study of patterns and order in nature, art and architecture. Doczi main interest is harmony and so he looks closely at the important link between music (sound) and form.
György Doczi (1905 - 1995) practiced architecture in Hungary, Sweden, Iran, and the United States. He initiated a permanent exhibit on form in nature and art at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, and was a founder of the Friends of Jungian Psychology Northwest.

Square, Circle, Triangle by Bruno Munari

This week's Recommended Read is an excellent book called Square, Circle, Triangle by the acclaimed giant in 20th Century design, Bruno Munari (1907 - 1998). He was an artist, designer and inventor in several fields of the visual arts - painting, sculptor, graphic design, industrial design and film. He produced many children's books and toys. Also non-visual arts, with his fascinating research on games, didactic method, tactile learning, kinaesthetic learning and creativity. A hugely prolific talent.

Another fantastic supplement to my books as he provides plenty of extra examples of these three simple, fundamental shapes in different cultures and applications (games, design, architecture, sculpting...).

The simple book cover says it all!

At the bottom of this post are YouTube links to interviews with B Munari and other interesting material.

This week's Recommended Read goes into pattern sharing in depth! "Crystal and Dragon" by David Wade is fascinating. A great supplement to my The Hidden geometry of Life since I summarise pattern sharing in two chapters. Similarly he is an artist and sculptor living in the UK. On my list of kindred souls I would like to meet.

David has also written about patterns for Wooden Books.

Exploring the interplay of form and energy, David Wade takes the reader on a journey through the world of successive ages from Plato's conception of the ideal form and the ancient Chinese philosophy of change to the modern scientific view of structure and indeterminacy as embodied in the laws of physics.

Paint Along With Karen

At Cornerstone Arts Centre (on 14th March 2020) I ran a Paint Along With the Artist workshop as part of International Women's Week.

Using acrylics has the main benefit of drying fairly quickly so we could add layers and do some acrylic flow with some success.  The them was going to be zoning areas of square blocks but it became very apparent that I could not 'box' people into doing this. Instead I encouraged different shapes of colour areas. Acrylic flow then integrate or differentiated these zones, plus it added an element of chaos to the order. This certainly contributed to energising the artworks, which were very static.

Sri Yantra Puja Vidhi - to remove all negative things from your life

8/6/2019

The Sri Yantra Puja

The Sri Yantra is an ancient scared geometry model (or yantra) that is used in the Sri Vidya school of Hindu tantra. Graphically it is a 2-dimensional representation of the Sacred Mount Meru, the centre of the Universe in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cosmology. Within the model are 9 interlocking triangles, the 'fire temple', representing the Cosmos and human body. 4 upward triangles are the masculine Shiva and the 5 downward are the female Shakti. These triangles in turn makes 43 smaller triangles, arranged in 5 levels (which is best seen in the 3D version of the Sri Yantra). These surround the central bindu, point of origin and non-duality. 2 concentric circles made up of 8 and 16 lotus petals respectively symbolise creation and reproductive force.
Picture
Arms of a Cross mark doorway into the square setting out stable foundations on the earth. Each door also is a doorway out into the regions of the cosmos. Through these you enter the  model gradually moving into the central bindu via the 9 layers, or chakra. Each of these 9 levels have a distinct shape,  name and are associated with a number of aspects of the Great, or Supreme, Mother.

In essence, you enter the constructs of the physical world and our bodies, bound within it, to ultimately experience the union of Shiva and Shakti in the Point of unity at the centre, the highest peak of the mountain.
Picture
Puja is 'the act of worship'. For Sri Yantra puja a 3-dimensional model is used, which is also used as the template for many Indian temples. During puja various items are poured over to bathe the Sri Yantra - milk, curd, honey, gangajal and ghee. Red cloth, red sandalwood, red thread, red rice are offered. Towards the end numerous flower petals shower the model.

It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides in the Yantra and She is invoked with full Vedic rituals, ideally on an auspicious day, during Yantra Prana Pratishtha (ceremony to consecrate the Sri Yantra and energise it with cosmic powers).
Every yantra has a mantra(s), tones in ancient Sanskrit that activate and invoke the power of the geometric model. During Sri Yantra puja about an hour of these are chanted by the swami. The presiding deity of the Sri Yantra is Maha Tripura Sundari, the Great Mother.  Each layer radiating out from the bindu has mudras, or deities, residing within them. This is describe in the Sri Devi Khadgamala Stotram, a hymn to the Divine Mother, which 'bestows a garland of swords upon those who recite it, symbol of the energy that enables us to transcend attachment and rise on the spiritual level'.  This Sanskrit stotra is a progressional worship of the many Goddess forms within the Sri Yantra and is considered as the highest form of worship to the Devi (Godess).

This is a simplified description of a multi-step, sacred ceremony that is many centuries old, with layers of rich symbolism. Doing a full worship is extremely difficult to do properly and few can do it!
The Sri Yantra puja is said to remove all negative things from your life.

Experiencing the Sri Yantra Puja

This summer Jaswinder Chali kindly invited me to join her and participate in a Sri Yantra Puja held in the Adhya Shakti Mataji Temple in Uxbridge, UK, a great honour. It was the first time Acharya Umesh Tiwariji (Instagram: Acharya Shri Umesh Tiwari) had visited the UK. He is a noted master trainer in the Sri Yantra Sadhana from Shrishri Vidhyadham.

You can experience the mantras of the Sri Yantra Puja by Acharya Umesh Tiwariji in the youtube video below.

The Gateway to the Heavens geometric model is central to the theme of the my books in The Gateway Series. When I first put this model together I was not aware of the Sri Yantra, which has many similarities. Sri Yantra loosely translates as Gateway to the Heavens and it seemed an appropriate name.

Connecting children to to their world - the language of shapes

Numerous times I have had conversations about how worthwhile it would be to teach children the significance of mathematics using examples of geometry around us in Nature. In fact, using examples everything we interact with and the many fun ways in which we use it - as in our games, clothes, music and so many other relevant ways that a child can easily relate to, and understand it.

Sometimes I dabble with the idea of producing a book for children describing the richness of the language of numbers. Maybe I will do one day, but in the meantime I searched around to see if anyone else had already done so.......and discovered.....

This Disney animation, "Donald in Mathmagic Land" was recommended to me. It is an example of how much more interesting, and memorable, mathematics could be made using visual, real examples from around us.
"The Greedy Triangle"....and several books that were already showing how fun the world of geometric shapes can be for the younger audience. In fact there were DOZENS approaching geometry-shapes and colours from different 'angles'!

Books on geometric shapes for young readers

"The I Hate Mathematics! book" by Marilyn Burns - '....a way of looking at the world and that it can be relevant to everyday life (Street maths) and fun'.

THE BINDING FORCE OF RINGS - Tolkien exhibition

All encompassing circle

Rings, or Circles, bind everything within as one. It is the nature the circle to encompass, hold and support whatever is contained within it, like a bowl. All geometric shapes are constructed with their corners touching the Circle from which they originate and are maintained. Indeed, all forms of existence shaped by geometric principles are contained within the circular vessel of reality.
Picture
THE GRID OF TIME
THE SUN is active, radiating out light that contains colours. We are made of light, we reflect light so that others might see us, light sustains us, colours provide vibrance and meaning to our life. Our inner 'light' radiates out to illuminate us and provide us with strength.

Light, and the fire creating it, have been revered for many generations. Coming together in a Circle we share a special moment that binds us together as a group and, ultimately, as part of the One Circle. Fire was frequently placed in the Centre, or another important item, or person, that was central to holding the Circle together. When removed the Circle dissolves away.
Picture
TIME is the abstract feature of reality give form by the circle. Binding all time within the eternal, vast circle on the perimeter that is centred around the immediate moment of the central Point. It is the Point that provides an axis around which all circles of every duration can rotate, like a wheel. The minute, hour, year, eon...eternity; every cycle revolves around the elusive, immediate moment.

THE INTENT and nature of the Centre radiates out in all directions, as light does. So if it is negative, or "rotten at the core", this also spreads outwards. Much like the inner Circles around a source of dark power when corrupted will influence outer Circles to eventually affect the whole community revolving around this source. Light and love will permeate the Circle, so whenever you are central to a Circle radiate out positive, loving intent.
For more on the characteristics of Circles and other geometric shapes please refer to my books in The Gateway Series.

The Lord of the Rings

The famous Bodlaien libraries in Oxford, UK, are holding a major exhibition of JRR Tolkien's work from the 1st June 2018, including his illustrations, poems, letters and personal items. As a fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, which I have read several times, I am looking forward to gaining an insight into the creative process of this gifted author. The binding power of rings and the significance of the intent of the ring bearers, being destructive dark or healing, loving light, are central to the success these epic stories.

Gateway to the Heavens
A glorious work that fires the imagination and helps us appreciate the truth of our reality.
NEXUS magazine
Do you realise you actually shape your destiny and shapes influence your destiny. If you want to understand how this works ask Karen to give a talk about it or read her excellent book. You may have hated even the mention of geometry at school, but Karen's simple and illustrated explanations will give you a real insight into this fascinating topic.
